My Story
I was once a wounded bird with no flight. As a child, I fought through chronic asthma that robbed me of a childhood, and debilitating eczema that rendered my skin cracked, bleeding, and the source of tremendous shame and embarrassment. I often wanted to crawl into my closet and hide until the storms of life past. Years later, with help from my parents and my three pillars of inspiration, the late Glenda Templeton, Dr. Diane Hambrick, and Dr. La-Doris McClaney, I began to soul-search and discovered who I REALLY am. I learned that my illnesses did not define me, but rather, they were to be used as the catalyst for me becoming a compassionate, empathetic, understanding person. I decided to break free from self-consciousness and shame, and emerge the beautiful, graceful, intelligent, powerful swan that I am. I now know that my role in this world is to share what I know and what I have learned. My mission is to help people discover their own power and show them how to use the stumbling blocks of life as steppingstones toward a higher and more robust future.
My career path has always been about discovering the "why" in life. From my days at the United States Attorneys Office watching criminal defendants on their worst day, to assisting adult adoptees in locating their birth families, from helping a family uncover their ancestry, to teaching workshops for young people to see themselves as worthy and valuable, I have always been in the business of trying to understand why one does what they do. I believe that at the core of all humanity is a healthy dose of goodness and fear. People, I believe, are inherently good, but often their choices, decisions, and beliefs are based in fear and miseducation. In a nutshell, people "do" without knowing WHY they do what they do. Everything that I am and everything that I teach is to help answer the question "WHY?"
As a child I didn't understand WHY I was so sickly. Now, I understand that adversity can breed strength if you have the proper support and education. I didn't understand WHY I was ostracized by my peers and my two older sisters (who, by the way are now my very best friends). Now, I understand that I needed to experience hurt so that I could recognize the hurt of others and then teach them to use it as fuel to do something amazing. I didn't understand WHY it felt like I couldn't ever catch a break. Now, I understand that I was flying into a headwind trying to manifest someone else's dream for my life, instead of getting into the flow of God's plan so that I could fulfill my purpose. This is WHY I do WHAT I do. Every workshop, training, book, coaching session, and speaking engagement is an exploration of YOUR WHY. Let me help you figure it out. Your WHY is the key to your WHAT!
